Internships for teachers at US universities

Internships for teachers at US universities

In difficult times of war, Ukrainians feel the unwavering support of the international community in various spheres of life. Education and science are no exception. A vivid example of this is the provision of scholarships for studying at various courses at prestigious American universities from the well-known educational company EMERITUS. Last academic year, our teachers were lucky to take advantage of this opportunity and take part in the competitive selection for scholarships from leading American universities. Receiving scholarships allowed them to improve their qualifications in the field of data processing.

In particular, Darya Tkach, associate professor of the Department of Physical Materials Science, successfully completed the course «Data Processing» at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Thanks to this, she acquired comprehensive knowledge of key concepts of data science, in particular, the development and analysis of databases using tools such as SQL and Python. I gained valuable skills in configuring a network to ensure data security, as well as managing large amounts of information using data storage and workflow management platforms. No less important was my acquaintance with artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, including reinforcement learning and deep neural networks. This expands the possibilities of working with modern advanced technologies and allows me to apply the acquired knowledge in various fields of professional activity, for example, materials development and research.

Head of the Department of Aircraft Engine Technology, Professor Dmytro Pavlenko, completed a six-month internship in the Applied Data Science program at Dartmouth University, one of the oldest and leading universities in the United States. This internship allowed him to acquire practical skills in data processing and visualization strategies using Python, mathematical statistics and probability theory, building mathematical models, experiments, studying cause-and-effect relationships, goal-oriented analysis, and machine learning. The knowledge gained will undoubtedly contribute to increasing the efficiency of research and teaching in the field of aircraft engine engineering.

One of the extremely useful aspects of the internship was getting acquainted with the features of the organization and operation of leading distance learning platforms. The balance between personal interaction with teachers and independent work, which included a number of activities such as short video presentations, text material, various forms of assessment: testing, mathematical quizzes, real-time coding tasks, and a final project, ensured the practical effectiveness of the course.

The application of the acquired knowledge further opens up new opportunities for improving educational programs in materials science and aircraft engines and broadens the horizons of research in the scientific field. Their basis will be used to improve the current educational components taught at our university.
