Internship at Pennsylvania State University, USA
At the end of November 2022, Associate Professor of the Department of Software at Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University Serhiy Serdyuk had the opportunity to undergo an internship at Pennsylvania State University, USA, which has about 90 thousand students and ranks 83rd in the world in the QS World University Rankings for 2024.
An internship at such a prestigious American university expands the international cooperation of the Department of Software and contributes to the further internationalization of the educational and scientific activities of Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University.
Serhiy Serdyuk underwent an internship at the Laboratory of Applied Cognitive Sciences under the guidance of Professor Frank Ritter, an expert in the field of cognitive modeling, cognitive architectures, human-computer interaction. Taking advantage of Mr. Ritter’s invitation, our professor participated in all types of classes in the disciplines of «Human-Machine Interaction» and «Usability».
One of the areas of activity of the laboratory was the development of an intelligent assistant system for the US Marine Corps. The system was intended to help in learning shooting at moving targets and combat rescue skills (battlefield ambulance).
Since Pennsylvania State University is helping Ukraine resist Russian aggression, Professor S. Serdyuk was immediately involved in the development, adaptation and translation into Ukrainian of recommendations for combat paramedics.
After several reports on the research that the professor conducted in Ukraine, he was also asked to prepare two proposals for participation in competitions for grants from Pennsylvania State University. As a result, in April 2023, a grant was received for «Teaching the Basics of Chemistry to Students at Risk.» About 3,000 students study chemistry at the university annually. About 20% of first-year students have difficulties learning the basics of chemistry. The main goal of the grant is to help such students.
