The path to energy independence with Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic

Zaporizha Polytechnic has joined the USAID Energy Security Project (ESP). Our proposal has passed all stages of selection and today a decision has been made on the university to obtain cogeneration units with a total capacity of 500 kW.

But there is still a long way to go: preparing design and estimate documentation, obtaining necessary permits, purchasing related equipment and carrying out installation work.

In order to find ways to solve the problems faced by enterprises and institutions implementing PEB, on September 13, the rector of Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University Viktor Greshta took part in a round table organized by USAID.

The round table «Using Cogeneration to Power Critical Infrastructure During the Next Heating Season» was opened by Kathleen Kirsch, Head of the Energy Team of the USAID/Ukraine Office of Economic Growth. She emphasized the importance of project implementation, stable electricity supply and ensuring critical infrastructure. And also thanked for the prompt implementation of the project.

USAID Energy Security Project Manager Mike Traynor recalled the main goal – ensuring the sustainability and resilience of the Ukrainian energy system, saving energy resources and, accordingly, increasing the economic efficiency of large and medium-sized industrial enterprises. He also outlined the planned perspective – a general change in the energy efficiency paradigm, in particular through scaling the project.

The following problematic issues were discussed during the meeting:

• licensing of economic activities for the production of thermal energy at small and medium-sized cogeneration plants
• accounting, pricing of consumed and produced resources

A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the USAID Energy Security Project and Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University. This is a socially important project not only to ensure the educational process at Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic, but also to operate dormitories where internally displaced persons and children live, as well as to conduct training in educational hubs of displaced secondary educational institutions located on the basis of our university.
