The first Potebnian Collegium at the Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
Institute of Linguistics named after O.O. Potebny National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine initiated the current format of the modern linguistic school — Potebny Collegium. Its purpose is to acquaint scientists from various fields with the latest achievements of linguistic science.
The first five-day linguistic school, in which linguists, lawyers, sociolinguists from various higher education institutions of Ukraine took an active part in its work, was held on September 18-22, 2023. Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic was represented at the Potebnyan Collegium by Halyna Onufrienko, associate professor of the Department of Ukrainian Studies and General Language Training.
Among the current achievements of comparative linguistics and applied linguistics is the unique British-Ukrainian project «English-Ukrainian legal dictionary (with examples from court practice)», in the implementation of which lawyers of the Ivan Franko National University, scientists of the Institute of Linguistics named after O.O. Potebny of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and colleagues from the University of Birmingham (Great Britain).
Corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, director of the Institute of Linguistics named after O.O. Bohdan Azhnyuk of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine during the presentation of this thorough terminographic project noted that the dictionary will become an important tool for the integration of Ukraine into the European legal environment and will contribute to the purification of Ukrainian legal terminology from the content layers of the times of totalitarianism and the remnants of Russian linguistic influence.
The total volume of the compiled material of the dictionary exceeds 550 pages of book text and amounts to about a thousand dictionary entries, most of which have several Ukrainian lexical counterparts to the English register unit. All values of register units are illustrated with examples from authentic English sources, the illustrations are accompanied by a Ukrainian translation. A significant part of the examples is taken from the decisions of the British courts, the selection of this material was carried out by partners from the University of Birmingham. The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine as part of the author team of the dictionary is represented by Doctor of Philological Sciences Bohdan Azhniuk (editor-lexicographer) and practical compilers Halyna Zymovets and Viktoriia Gongalo.
Already this calendar year, the joint work of lawyers and linguists on the preparation of dictionary materials for publication in the format of a book edition should be completed.
The thorough materials of the lecture «Verbal crime as an object of linguistic expertise» and the linguistic workshop as an illustration for the lecture caused great scientific attention of the present lawyers and linguists and further discussion in the «question-answer» format.
The program of the collegium also included panel discussions on the difficulties of translating English-language legal terminology, in which the acting director took an active part. chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, doctor of legal sciences, professor Serhiy Holovaty.
So the university’s teaching staff is waiting for a new translation dictionary of legal terms.
