Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic students win in the finals of the course «Technological Leadership in Hardware Startups»

On June 30, the final stage of the pilot course «Technological Leadership in Hardware Startups» from YEP – an ecosystem of innovative entrepreneurship, implemented jointly with the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, the Office for Entrepreneurship and Export Development, the national project Diya.Business, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Startup Fund, Genesis with the support of the USAID Program «Competitive Economy of Ukraine».

The pilot course was introduced in 5 leading polytechnic universities of Ukraine, including NU «Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic». YEP attracted well-known Ukrainian hardware startups, organizations and companies to conduct workshops — Petcube, SmartZavod, Promin Aerospace, Iot Hub, IOON, knopka and others. Teachers from Stanford and Tallinn Technical Universities and Aalto University also joined in. The powerful lecture part was supplemented with practice. Every week, students worked on projects, received feedback from teachers and invited mentors on their startup projects. Within four months, teams were created that presented about 20 projects, half of which were selected for additional processing and presentation in the final.

The Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University presented four teams of students and postgraduates of the Department of Electric Drive and Automation of Industrial Installations at the final competition under the leadership of the head of the department, Andriy Pirozhko, and associate professor, Olena Nazarova.

Startup ideas proposed by our teams:

  • dust-free gluing of glass to the screen of devices
  • recycling plastic bottles into thread for 3D printing
  • designing environmentally friendly smart means of cleaning rivers from garbage
  • development of a lock for bomb shelters based on artificial intelligence

The jury of the final stage included successful representatives of the Ukrainian startup ecosystem: Oleksiy Solntsev (CEO Smartzavod), Roman Kravchenko (Founder Iot Hub), Kseniia Semenova (Program Lead YEP), Ivan Osadchy (CEO knopka).

The result of a tense struggle was the victory of two teams from Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic University, which will take part in a hackathon at the end of July, where they will have the opportunity to directly manufacture a prototype and present it to potential investors.

We believe that for the teams, participation in the pilot course and the opportunity to make a minimum viable product (MVP) under the guidance of experienced startupers will be the first step towards their own business.

We wish the participants and their managers further success and victories at the hackathon!
