International Mother Language Day was introduced by UNESCO back in 2000 with the aim of preserving languages in the world and respecting them, of which there are about 7,000. Since then, this holiday has been celebrated annually in our country on February 21, according to the decree of the President of Ukraine.
A mother tongue is a mirror of a people, a verbal self-portrait that reflects its historical, cultural and intellectual heritage. And every nation took place only when it realized itself in its mother tongue. Our native, Ukrainian, as a language majestic, heroic, melodious and powerful in all its functional styles, has entered the top thirty of the most widespread languages in the world! The Ukrainian language is the genetic code of the Ukrainian nation, the most valuable centuries-old heritage and the soul of the Ukrainian people. Honoring this great and unique treasure of the native word, we must bear responsibility for it before the past, present and future and realize every day that a strong language is a successful state. And during the fight against the aggressor, the Ukrainian language is an important element of resistance, a verbal «home of being», a refuge of the unconquered national spirit.
