Guest lecture "Activities of the Ombudsman of Ukraine. Practical aspects of monitoring compliance with human rights"
On October 22, Zaporizhzhya Polytechnic University hosted a guest lecture “Activities of the Ombudsman of Ukraine. Practical aspects of monitoring the observance of human rights”, which was conducted by the representative of the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for human rights in the Zaporizhzhia region, Mykhailo Volkov. The lecture was organized with the support of the Department of Constitutional, Administrative and Labor Law.
The meeting was attended by scientific and pedagogical workers and students of the Faculty of Law, as well as students and employees of other faculties who are interested in the implementation and protection of human rights in Ukraine. Vice-rector Andriy Ivanchenko congratulated the participants and wished them an inspiring discussion.
During the lecture, Mr. Mykhailo spoke about the main areas of activity of the ombudsman institution, about issues related to the protection of human rights and the peculiarities of monitoring their observance by the ombudsman, about the activities of the office, reception of citizens, and also provided practical recommendations for the protection of one’s own rights. Among the painful issues raised during the lecture:
– participation of the ombudsman’s office in the return of prisoners of war and civilian hostages
– protection and return of forcibly deported and displaced children outside of Ukraine
– protection of people in places of detention
Participants discussed issues of environmental safety and protection of rights to a safe environment, as well as topics of protection of the right to fair justice and the right to appeal, which are relevant for the Zaporizhia region and Zaporizhzhia.
Open meetings, where you can engage in dialogue with experts-practitioners, are a mandatory part of the educational process at the Zaporizhia Polytechnic. This lecture contributed to increasing legal awareness and the development of culture, respect for human rights and freedoms.
