The educational and professional program «Applied Materials Science» of the Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University is aimed at training highly qualified specialists capable of solving complex production, technological, research and engineering tasks in the field of development, selection, research, manufacturing, processing, operation and diagnostics of modern structural and functional materials. The program meets modern trends in the development of materials science, the needs of the national economy, and international requirements for the training of engineering personnel, ensuring the formation of competencies necessary for work in the conditions of high-tech production, digital transformation of industry, and the post-war recovery of Ukraine.
Preparation is carried out on the basis of fundamental knowledge of physics, chemistry, mathematics, mechanics and materials science, followed by in-depth study of professional disciplines. Students learn the patterns of formation of the structure and properties of materials, physical and mechanical metallurgy, crystallography, phase transformations, physical chemistry of materials, modern methods of thermal, chemical-thermal and thermomechanical processing, technologies for obtaining metal, polymer, ceramic, composite and functional materials, methods of non-destructive testing, technical diagnostics, standardization, certification and product quality management.
Special attention is paid to modern digital engineering technologies. The educational program involves the use of computer modeling of the structure and properties of materials, automated design of technological processes, digital methods of analyzing the results of experimental studies, elements of machine learning for predicting the properties of materials, technologies of additive manufacturing (3D printing), modern information systems and software used in materials science and mechanical engineering.
The educational process combines lecture, practical and laboratory classes, implementation of course projects and qualification work, individual research tasks, educational, industrial and pre-diploma practice. Considerable attention is paid to the formation of practical skills in working with modern laboratory equipment: metallographic and electronic microscopes, equipment for mechanical tests, spectral analysis, heat treatment, non-destructive testing, measurement of physical and mechanical characteristics of materials. This ensures the acquisition of competencies in planning and conducting experiments, analyzing research results, optimizing technological processes and forecasting the operational reliability of products.
A distinctive feature of the educational and professional program is its pronounced practical orientation, integration of education, science and production, as well as orientation to the needs of high-tech enterprises of Ukraine. Formation of the content of the program is carried out with the involvement of employers, representatives of industrial enterprises, scientific institutions and the professional community. Practical training of students is implemented in cooperation with leading enterprises of the machine-building, aviation, metallurgical and energy industries, including JSC «MOTOR SICH», SE «Ivchenko-Progres», PJSC «Zaporizhstal», as well as other enterprises of the region, which ensures the acquisition of relevant production experience and promotes the employment of graduates.
The educational and professional program forms in the students the ability to carry out professional activities in the field of creation and operation of modern materials, product quality assurance, technical expertise, engineering production support, technological training, scientific research and innovation activities. Graduates can work as materials science engineers, technological engineers, quality control, technical diagnostics and non-destructive testing specialists, testing laboratory engineers, standardization, certification, metrology specialists, scientific staff, and also hold other positions in accordance with the National Classifier of Professions.
The educational and professional program ensures the acquisition of a modern engineering education at the European level, the formation of professional mobility, readiness for innovative activities, continuous professional development and continuation of studies at the second (master’s) level of higher education. It meets the principles of student-centered learning, academic integrity, integration of education and science, orientation to the needs of stakeholders and the requirements of the modern labor market, which are important criteria for ensuring the quality of education during the accreditation of an educational program.
