Scientific conference «Current problems of international vocabulary in the Ukrainian literary language»
As part of the annual university decade dedicated to the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, the Department of Ukrainian Studies and General Language Training of the Faculty of Humanities held a student scientific conference, which started on October 25.
This year’s conference theme is very relevant in our time of intensive globalization processes, large-scale informatization, and the intensification of international communication in the promotion of international projects. The plenary session, five faculty locations (GF, BAD, BTU, MF, CST and BC) of the conference and one guest location were held in an online format.
The participants of the plenary session were welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of BTU, Professor Olena Vasilyeva, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Professor Mykola Dedkov, and the Head of the Department of Student Research, Snezhana Vychuzhanina. The conference moderator, Associate Professor Halyna Onufrienko, delivered the opening remarks «The Ukrainian language is a weapon, the Ukrainian language is a medicine, the Ukrainian language is a symbol of the indomitability of the Ukrainian people.»
At the plenary session on November 1, 1st–3rd year students from various faculties of the university made presentations. The information relevant to higher education students harmonized with creative presentations that impressed with their originality: «The Ukrainian Language in the Modern Globalization Space» (Mykyta Khmura, BTU–0113), «International Vocabulary in the Works of the Kobzar» (Valeria Kolomeytseva, GF–314), «International Vocabulary in Modern Society: A Journey Through Language Borders» (Viktoria Kovtun, BAD–532), «Functioning of International Vocabulary in the Mass Media Space: From the Status of Slang to the Language Norm» (Kateryna Dzetsyna, GF–313), «Mosaic of Essays in the Scientific and Educational Space» (Nika Krotova, BAD–513), «Language Borrowings, Internationalisms, Interlexemes: Terminological Nuances» (Alina Prokopenko, GF–114), «Terms-internationalisms in modern economic terminology» (Viktoria Nerezova, BTU–1114), «Gender features in linguistic communication on the example of computer discourse» (Katerina Chakmazova, KNT–124), «Main means of transmitting internationalisms in Ukrainian based on sentences from English-language scientific and technical texts» (Dmytro Chernenko, MF–614).
The topics of the faculty locations took into account the specialties in which students study. The first location session «International Vocabulary in the Focus of Modern Ukrainian Linguistics and in Professional Communication» (1st–2nd year students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages) took place on October 25, and was solemnly opened by Snezhana Vychuzhanina, noting the importance of active participation of students in scientific conferences and round tables dedicated to the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, which are initiated annually by the Department of Ukrainian Studies and General Language Training.
The moderator of this location, Associate Professor Halyna Onufrienko, drew attention to the leading functions of the Ukrainian language in society, which, accumulating the experience of society, ensuring a connection between generations and the centuries-old memory of the people, simultaneously changes in space and time, responding to all changes in society and the linguistic consciousness of its speakers. Therefore, the problem of internationalisms in the Ukrainian language is of particular importance today, when integration processes in the fields of science and technology have reached a fairly high level and are developing further.
Speakers Sofiia Dudina, Polina Dudkina, Eva Zhylyanska, Kateryna Dzetsyna presented independently prepared video presentations on the conceptual content of international terms currently popular in educational and scientific discourse – a master class and a rating, on the differences between internationalisms and pseudo-internationalisms, the functions of international words in the mass media space, and internationalisms of ancient Greek and Latin linguistic origin. These presentations by speakers are a useful resource for higher education students both in the educational process and in their chosen professional activities.
The second location «International Terms in Professional Communication in the Field of Design» (1st–3rd year students of BAA, moderator – Associate Professor Galyna Onufrienko) was held on October 30. Students Kostyantyn Barnyak, Ulyana Pogorelova, Viktoriya Kovtun, and Nika Krotova made presentations relevant to their chosen profession, discussing the relevance of international terms in the field of graphic design in everyday communication, the conceptual content of internationalisms of Latin origin in the educational and scientific spheres.
At the guest Kyiv location (moderator — Professor Anzhela Krasnytska), second-year students of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Law and Psychology Amina Voynova, Elizaveta Paliy, and Angelina Slepko made reports on internationalisms in the official, business, and scientific styles of the Ukrainian language.
The third location meeting «Internationalisms and pseudo-internationalisms in the lexical composition of the language» (moderator – Associate Professor Iryna Voronyuk) and the fourth location «Internationalisms and terms of foreign origin in economic terminology» (moderators – Associate Professor Kateryna Bondarchuk, senior lecturer of the department Lina Myronyuk) were held on November 5. First-year students of the BTU faculty Matviy Kushpar, Diana Savka, Valeria Demykhova, Evelina Bedenko, Elizaveta Bankivska, Ivan Kikot, Vladyslav Hutsel, Kira Zaliska, Andriy Shtepa discussed current issues of the functioning of terms of foreign origin in the Ukrainian literary language and economic terminology. Students got acquainted with the criteria for distinguishing internationalisms and pseudo-internationalisms, the features of translating international vocabulary in the hospitality industry.
The fifth location «Language in the Dimensions of Today» (moderators – associate professors Tetyana Bilenko and Tetyana Katysh) took place on November 5 in groups of first-year students of the faculties of CST and BC. Students Yan Karpenko, Yegor Vovk, Yevheniy Sverhun, Tetyana Sydorenko, Yegor Devyatka, Oleksandr Lyuty, Ilarion Kholodulin focused their presentations on the peculiarities of the language of media discourse and phraseology, discussed the influence of social networks on the Ukrainian language, the peculiarities of computer terminology, and the importance of gender markers in translation.
The conference ended with a review of presentations for the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, prepared by the team of the university scientific library of NU «Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic» in the electronic resource, and thematic materials on YouTube.
During the scientific communication at the conference, a friendly atmosphere prevailed, and there was an active discussion of topical issues of the functioning of language in the professional sphere. In the conditions of prolonged martial law, the scientific conference in an online format united students who are now in different parts of the country and even beyond its borders. The Ukrainian language now sounds all over the world. And our language is our weapon, our language is medicine. A strong language is a strong state!
