Course «English for Academic Purposes»

Course «English for Academic Purposes»

3 courses for our students and academic staff from Cardiff University teachers have been completed.

The course «English for Academic Purposes» for two groups was taught by Caris Watkins and Jenny Owen.

The «Conversation Club» meetings were conducted by Richard Benson, and Daniel Cornelius and Kelly Wrigley worked with English teachers from the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation on the course «Professional Development for Teachers.»

For ten weeks, course participants improved their academic writing skills, improved their conversational skills and deepened their knowledge of other cultures, analyzed their teaching context and discussed methods for improving the educational process.

Next semester, cooperation between our universities in this area will continue.

The courses are very useful for maintaining the level of English proficiency and should be conducted periodically.

Iryna Lazneva, Department of International Economic Affairs, Associate Professor

The course provided me with valuable knowledge and skills that I can apply in writing scientific papers. It enhanced my understanding of the subject matter and equipped me with practical tools to tackle related challenges. Additionally, the interactive elements of the course, such as small group discussions and practical assignments, facilitated a deeper comprehension of the material.

Hanna Laptieva, Department of Integrated Technologies of Welding and Modeling of Structures, Associate Professor

Nowadays, the ability to write such works in English is becoming increasingly important. This course provided an opportunity to understand the most common mistakes, various techniques for writing scientific papers were shown, as well as the opportunity to practice with the support of a teacher.

Olena Skuibida, Department of Occupational Safety and Environmental Protection, Associate Professor

The course is useful for writing academic papers, in particular for Scopus articles. For my professional development it is also important to investigate the methodology of teaching the colleagues from the UK use

Anna Ben, Metal Forming Department, Senior Lecturer

During the course we were shown how to compose texts written in the correct academic style. This is very useful for me as a teacher, especially when I write scientific articles. I have got a lot of useful tricks.

Pavlo Tryshyn, Department of Machine Building Technology, Senior Lecturer

I learned a lot of valuable information about proper academic writing. It was a revelation to me that some expressions and phrases are used exclusively in informal writing.

Dmytro Pavlenko, Aviation Engine Technology Department, Head

The course stood out from others I’ve taken due to its clarity and specificity, providing me with valuable insights for preparing various academic texts. Its logical structure, accessible content, and sharp focus on the needs of an academic audience underscored its value to me.

Daria Tkach, Materials Science Department, Associate Professor

I learned a lot about how to write in an academic style, what words and expressions should be used and what should be avoided. The course is quite complex and intensive, but it is very necessary for the development of teachers and significantly increases the chances of getting a positive review of an article submitted to Q1 journals.

It was amazing! I was surprised with the broad topics for discussion, which were current and interesting for all participants. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere prevailed at the classes. Maksym Glebov, Software Tools Department, KNT-132, student

It really gave me a wonderful practice of my speaking skills. I talked with different people about different topics and had fun.

Milena Kocheva, Software Tools Department, KNT-132, student

It was such fun, all the activities were really interesting to discuss and are useful in real life.

Richard was not judgmental at all about our mistakes, he was helpful instead and encouraged us to express ourselves by maintaining conversations, asking and answering questions, and of course making some jokes)

Also I really like the absence of homework hahaha, all I needed was just to attend the club and speak «here and now», with no preparations, only improvisation)

So for me it was wonderfully spent time with benefit for my language skills)))

Volodymyr Osadchyi, Department of Electric Drive and Commercial Plant Automation, Associate Professor

I became better at listening and less afraid of making mistakes when speaking.

Ihor Babarykin, Department of Integrated Technologies of Welding and Modeling of Structures, PhD student

I increased my vocabulary. I improved my pronunciation, because the teacher corrected our mistakes.

Olena Nazarova, Department of Electric Drive and Commercial Plant Automation, Associate Professor

This course disciplined me to attend regular classes in spoken English. The topics for discussion were ambiguous. This created an opportunity for many points of view to be discussed. In addition to English, I learned something interesting about the Christmas traditions of different nationalities. General impressions are positive.

Artur Timokhin, Radio Engineering and Telecommunications Department, BK-233, student

Everything was good, thanks to Richard, he created a really friendly atmosphere.

Alina Kazurova, Electric Drive and Commercial Plant Automation Department, Associate Professor; Center for Internationalization and International Cooperation, Head

Attending the Speaking Club really helped me increase my confidence when communicating in English, improve my listening comprehension, speak and not be afraid to make mistakes. Class time passed quickly and fun, thanks to the friendly and relaxed atmosphere created by our teacher Richard Benson. The variety of topics in classes allowed me not only to expand my vocabulary, but also to learn something new and interesting.

Daria Tkach, Materials Science Department, Associate Professor

This allows me to keep my English skills at the same level and even improve them. In addition, regular classes at the conversation club give me the opportunity to speak English more confidently, better understand different accents, and learn new words.
