More and more Ukrainian women are going into science
According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the number of women with PhDs is increasing faster than that of men

According to available statistical data, as of October 1, 2011, 14,895 doctors of science worked in the Ukrainian economy, which is 3.3% more than on the corresponding date last year. At the same time, the number of men increased by 1.7%, and women by 8.8 percent.
In 2011, 480 people received a doctorate. Of these, the lion’s share (36.9%) are heads of enterprises, institutions, organizations, production or functional units. The rest are scientists (28.8% – professors of departments, 17.5% – associate professors, 13.3% – research assistants).
46.0% of doctors of science worked in social sciences, 13.8% in technical sciences, 15.0% in natural sciences, 14.2% in medical sciences, 2.9% in agricultural sciences, and 8.1% in humanities, – statistics show.
The average age of male doctors of science at the time of receiving a diploma was 50 years, women – 46 years.
With a slight increase in the number of senior researchers (by 0.3%), the number of professors and associate professors increased compared to 2010. At the same time, the number of female professors increased by 14.0%, associate professors by 4.2%, and senior research fellows by 1.4%.
The share of doctors of sciences elected as academicians and corresponding members of state academies was 6.2% (917 people).
As of October 1, 2011, almost half of the doctors of science held positions as heads of enterprises, institutions, organizations or production and other major divisions (49.6%), 30.9% held positions as professors of departments; more than two-thirds of the doctors worked in higher educational institutions, a quarter in research institutes, their branches and departments and other scientific institutions; 178 doctors of science (1.2%) worked in state authorities.
As of October 1, 2011, in the distribution of doctors of science by age, the share of male scientists of retirement age increased and amounted to 58.4% (in 2010 – 58.0%), and their average age compared to the previous period remained almost unchanged – 62 years; the share of female doctors of retirement age decreased from 53.2% to 52.0%, which led to a decrease in the average age of female scientists from 57 to 56 years. At the same time, the share of young scientists (under 40 years of age) continues to remain quite insignificant – 4.4% (655 people).
As a result of scientific activity, 45.4% of doctors of science had scientific works recommended by academic councils and published in professional publications, and 9.2% acted as authors (co-authors) in applications for obtaining a protection document for an object of intellectual property rights. The largest number of such doctors of science worked in organizations of the Ministry of Education and Science (2881 people), the National Academy of Sciences (1086) and the Ministry of Health (769).
In the period from October 1, 2010 to October 1, 2011, 853 people left the number of doctors of science employed in the economy of Ukraine for various reasons, including 106 people retired, 190 died, 6 people went abroad, 549 left for other reasons; 147 people changed their place of work. It should be noted that the number of doctors of science who go abroad for permanent residence is decreasing from year to year, and over the past 5 years, on average, it has not exceeded 6 people per year.
