Project «Interesting Summer» with the Children’s and Youth Scientific University «Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic»
On July 25, the cycle of classes of the project «Interesting Summer» for schoolchildren of the VIII Regional Summer School for Gifted Students from the Regional Center for Scientific and Technical Creativity of Students «Grani» ZOR in cooperation with the Children’s and Youth Scientific University of the Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University ended.
Lecturers of the Department of Power Supply of Industrial Enterprises Kateryna Bratkovska and Oleksandr Shram told the participants about power systems and their problems, introduced them to different types of green energy sources, and showed how energy is transported and converted for consumption. Schoolchildren learned about the Smart Home project, the features of its elements and energy savings.
Teachers of the Department of Composite Materials, Chemistry and Technologies Ivan Akimov and Oleksiy Voskoboynik told the children about the materials used for printing on 3D printers, made a real structure from individual parts. Using a huge model of a polyethylene molecule, they examined the structure and composition of polymers and learned about fantastic areas of application in real life.
Teachers of the Department of Electric Drive and Automation of Industrial Plants Alina Kazurova and Olena Nazarova introduced the schoolchildren to the Micro:bit board and its programming environment MakeCode and learned why this board is called a real microcomputer. Students created programs for controlling the mood of the «Micro:bit», predicted the future and found answers to questions with a magic ball, and developed their first own mini-game that develops the participants’ mental abilities and dexterity, «Catch the Dot». Participants received initial practical skills in developing programs to control the micro:Maqueen Plus V2 robot car for Micro:bit. Students were divided into five teams, each of which programmed its own robot.
In addition to theoretical and practical classes, throughout July, children enjoyed learning a self-defense course from the KOMGO «Educated Initiative».
The «Interesting Summer» project ended with a meeting with representatives of the student government, who spoke about the possibilities of personal development, participation in university and international projects, and the prospects for the activities of the student government of Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic. An element of psychological relief for children was an interactive activity on guessing a musical composition by emoticons, the winners of which received goodies from our university.
Pro-rector Andriy Ivanchenko congratulated the students on the successful completion of the project. All participants received certificates from the Regional Center for Scientific and Technical Creativity of Student Youth «Grani» and souvenirs from Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic University.
