Round table at Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic on World Embroidery Day
Every year on the third Thursday of May, starting from 2006, we celebrate World Embroidery Day.
On May 16, an interfaculty round table «And Ukrainian embroidery is a miracle, it contains the people’s code, their soul» was organized and held at Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic on the basis of the Faculty of Humanities.
Students from three faculties of the university took an active part in the preparation and holding of the round table: humanitarian, legal and construction, architecture and design, the moderators of the event were associate professor of the Department of Ukrainian Studies and ZMP Galyna Onufrienko, head of the department of scientific work of students Snezhana Vychuzhanina.
Students discussed current scientific problems: embroidery as a symbol identity, unity, freedom and invincibility; historical sources of vyshyvanka: myths and facts; traditional and modern embroidery techniques; ornamental code, sacredness and color of vyshyvanka; markers of regional embroidery; symbolism of vyshyvanka in Ukrainian poetry; vyshyvanka as a talisman and prayer without words.
The speakers introduced the participants to the independently prepared video presentations «Ukrainian vyshyvanka: the code of the nation and the soul of the people in the symbols and color of patterns», «World Vyshyvanka Day: history and modernity», answered questions, and provided interesting and little-known facts about vyshyvanka. Students took part in an interactive conversation, recited poems about embroidery, exchanged memories of celebrating World Embroidery Day during their school years and impressions of this year’s celebration of the holiday at Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic University.
Students from the following groups took an active part in the preparation and holding of the round table: GF-313 – Kateryna Dzetsyna, Mariia Nakonechna and Elizaveta Sinitsyna; UF-313 – Avagyan Karina, Yeryhina Valeria, Koval Maryna, Lyubimenko Valeria, Svyrydenko Viktoriia; BAD-532 – Kovtun Viktoriia; BAD-533 — Basheeva Vitalina.
The results of the round table were summed up by Snezhana Vychuzhanina and Halyna Onufrienko, noting the quality of the students’ speeches, the originality of the presentations, thanking all the participants and speakers and wishing them inspiration and success in acquiring competencies in their chosen specialties, necessary for the reconstruction of their native country in the post-war period. And the amulet and prayer without words is and always will be the embroidery — the eternal symbol of the national shrine and unity of the people, family memory and beauty, health, and happy fate.
