The second day of the II International Twinning UK-Ukraine 2024 Conference «The Role of Universities in the Post-War Reconstruction of Ukraine»

The second day (July 5) of the II International Twinning UK-Ukraine 2024 Conference «The Role of Universities in the Post-War Reconstruction of Ukraine» was held in the hospitable walls of Vistula University, Warsaw. At this conference, Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic was represented by the Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work and International Activities Valerii Naumyk and the Head of the Center for Internationalization and International Cooperation Alina Kazurova.

The conference program was full of interesting and informative speeches. The founder of the Twinning initiative, the head of the Cormack Consultancy Group, Charles Cormack, delivered a welcoming speech and summarized the achievements of two years of cooperation. Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Mykhailo Vinnytskyi spoke about the challenges of higher education during a full-scale invasion and the resilience of the academic community. The issue of sustainable development of higher education in Ukraine in the context of war was addressed by Olha Budnyk, the Presidential Advisor and Commissioner for the Fund of the President of Ukraine for the Support of Education, Science and Sports, the Head of Universities UK International, the Director of the University of St. Andrews, Dame Sally Mapstone, and the Director of the British Council in Ukraine, Colm McGivern.

The Twinning universities shared stories of successful cooperation, and the Director of the British-Ukrainian Initiative, Oleksandr Smirnov, spoke about the achievements and challenges in implementing double degree programs – now 10 twin universities have been able to implement such programs.

The conference also included a panel discussion on the role and contribution that universities can make to the recovery, reconstruction and modernization of Ukraine, as well as a discussion of best practices in comprehensive support provided by British universities to their Ukrainian partners.

The conference was summed up by Martin Cushing, Director of Science and Innovation at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, United Kingdom.

Participating in this conference was a great opportunity to meet with colleagues from Cardiff University — Michelle Smith, Project Manager of the International Department, and Professor Carol Featherston, Head of the Sustainable Transport and Aerospace Research Theme — and to discuss ideas for further cooperation between our twin universities within the framework of the Twinning program.

We express our sincere gratitude to Charles Cormack, Chairman of the Cormack Consultancy Group, for a fantastic initiative, thanks to which we have gained not just new partners, but real friends who sincerely support us in difficult times for Ukraine. We are grateful to the Director of the Twinning Initiative, Oleksandr Smirnov, as well as the entire CCG team, for their assistance and comprehensive support in establishing relations between the two higher education institutions!

Let’s get inspired, work and move towards Victory together!
