DUNE STEM class “Lego train: a journey into the world of engineering!”

On February 28, at a STEM class at the Children’s and Youth Scientific University of the Zaporizhia Polytechnic National University, students became architects and engineers of a new city. They built it from scratch: they designed the infrastructure, invented original stations on the train route, where they loaded and unloaded the necessary materials and products. Each team created its own vision of a modern, comfortable city — with well-thought-out logistics and a convenient transport system.

The students designed a book supermarket, a beauty salon, a bank, a fire station, a pharmacy, and photo zones — everything needed for a comfortable life for residents. The teams built loading stations, warehouses, container cranes, and thought out how to make the structures stable and functional. They tested the strength of the structures, improved the solutions, and took into account the needs of their city.

Next came mathematics: they had to plan delivery routes, measure the length of the tracks, determine the travel time, and calculate the speed of the train. The students analyzed the efficiency of transportation and thought about how to optimize logistics between different stations in the new city.

The automation stage was no less exciting: the children started the train, stopped it at the desired stations, controlled the speed, and simulated different situations during movement. And at the end, each team presented its project, talked about the created objects, logistical solutions and the best engineering findings.

The classes were conducted by associate professors of the Department of Electric Drive and Automation of Industrial Installations Olena Nazarova and Volodymyr Osadchy.

Thanks to active cooperation with the Educational Space “Dii” of the Department of Education of the Energodar City Council, the STEM Center of the DYUNU was able to conduct exciting classes with a new automated LEGO set, which opens up even more opportunities for practical learning and development of students’ technical skills.
