Donate blood – save a life
Did you know that Donor Day is held once a semester at ZNTU? Any healthy willing citizen of Ukraine, over 18 years of age and weighing more than 60 kilograms, can become a donor.
Being a donor is actually a very responsible step. In order to become a donor, you need to learn to protect yourself for the sake of others – give up drinking, smoking, and lead a healthy lifestyle. But there are also more positive sides: before donating blood, a person undergoes an examination, so this is a great opportunity to check one’s own health. In addition, regular donation contributes to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis, obesity, improves the functioning of the immune system and rejuvenates the body, due to faster blood renewal. However, after donating blood, one must be careful not to overexert the body, eat regularly and drink more fluids, and immediately after the procedure drink sweet tea and eat something light, which was so carefully taken care of by the ZNTU students’ trade union committee.
One of the organizers, Tetyana Nikolaenko, told more about the event itself: «This event is organized by the trade union committee of ZNTU students, it is held once a semester – in spring and autumn – since 2009, but I personally have been doing it for the last 4 years. Despite the tightening of donation criteria, many people always come to donate blood, today we had 125 applicants, of which 100 were admitted, and 25 were not, due to health reasons. Our university has its own blood bank, and recently a lot of students have come to us with a request to help their relatives and friends. Of course, we try to help them as much as possible».
Having experienced this difficult role, I asked the students why they decided to become a donor.
This is help to people. Anything can happen, no matter how little, maybe someday I will need help, says Tyminska Olesya.
I became a donor because my father is a donor, and it is a family tradition, – said Daryna Vasylchenko.
My family and I always go to donate blood. Since my 18th birthday, this is already the third donation, Elizaveta Belinska said.
These are the thoughts of Mashinka donors.
Well, being a donor is noble. By helping others, you help yourself. I hope that next time as many people as possible will join this honorable mission!
