A new wave of the legal education project «I have the right!»

Today, the implementation of the legal education project «I have the right!» continues. Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, which is aimed at increasing the legal literacy of Ukrainians and forming a new legal culture in society.

This project has actively changed and continues to change the legal consciousness of citizens, implements their constitutional rights and helps to receive free legal assistance.

Thanks to such campaigns within the framework of the legal education project «I have the right!» Ministry of Justice of Ukraine such as: traveling abroad with a child, responsible parenting, there are no other people’s children, stop bullying, stop violence, the right to enforce a court decision, stop mask shows, protection of the rights of Ukrainian citizens in Crimea, consumer rights, a public advisor in each community, the right to land, the right to a subsidy, how to resolve a dispute, citizens were able to get comprehensive answers to their questions and obtain the necessary information about their rights, where and how to protect them.

In July 2019, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine made a decision to continue the implementation of the legal education project «I have the right!» until 2022. The new wave of the project provides for the involvement of innovative tools and solutions to simplify people’s access to legal information, the development and introduction of legal education campaigns on topical topics of interest to citizens of Ukraine, and simplifying people’s access to legal information.

Regarding combating human trafficking

Human trafficking in the modern world is one of the most brutal mass violations of human rights and freedoms. The social threat of human trafficking, as an extremely dangerous crime, lies in the encroachment on inalienable human rights – the right to respect, to freedom and personal integrity, freedom of movement and free choice of residence, and sometimes the right to life. Human trafficking poses a significant social danger to women, men and children who are used for the purpose of begging, sexual exploitation and involvement in other illegal activities that degrade human honor and dignity.

Human trafficking – this is the act of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harbouring or receiving persons by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability, of bribery, of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person controlled by another person.

The exploitation of a person in this article should be understood as all forms of sexual exploitation, use in the pornography business, forced labour or forced provision of services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude, involvement in debt bondage, removal of organs, conducting experiments on a person without his consent, adoption for profit, forced pregnancy, involvement in criminal activity.

As a rule, the crime begins with human traffickers offering their future victims attractive employment opportunities. In many cases, a person learns about the actual «terms of the contract» only after arriving at their destination, when their passport is taken away, they are subjected to physical and mental violence, and they demand to pay back the money spent on documents, visas, and travel tickets.

According to the modern definition of «human trafficking,» it is defined even without the sign of crossing state borders. After all, there are a large number of cases of «internal» human trafficking, which occurs when people are moved from one region to another within the same country. Such people suffer from violence no less than those who have to cross the border.

To avoid trouble in the future and not fall into slavery, you should listen to the advice of experts:

– do not trust your passport to anyone. Documents proving your identity should always be with you;

– leave at home, with your friends or relatives, detailed information about your stay abroad with your address and contact numbers, as well as a copy of your international passport and contract;

– if you plan to marry a foreign citizen, use the advice of a lawyer or specialists from the embassies of the country in which you plan to live, regarding your rights and the rights of your children born abroad and in Ukraine. Also remember that a fictitious marriage is a violation of the law. This may result in your imprisonment or deportation (expulsion from the country);

– do not forget to find out the phone numbers of Ukrainian embassies and consular offices in the country you are traveling to. If you find yourself in a difficult situation, are left without a passport, or someone is threatening you, contact the representatives of the embassies of your country;

– use the services of non-governmental organizations and services that are actively working in foreign countries, providing assistance to people who find themselves in a difficult situation;

– pay attention to the fact that the period of stay in the territory of a foreign country is indicated in your visa. Violation of the visa regime will make your next trip abroad impossible;

– do not forget that knowing at least basic words of a foreign language will greatly facilitate your stay abroad.

Human trafficking does not recognize state borders, does not take into account the differences between developed and developing countries. It easily adapts to both poverty and luxury, and is relevant for almost all peoples. Therefore, the fight against this crime, a violation of human rights in the modern world, requires the combined efforts of the international community and the public of each country.
