XIII Interuniversity Scientific Conference of Students, Master’s and Postgraduate Students «Terms in Scientific Communication»

This is the name of the 13th Interuniversity Scientific Conference to the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language and the 116th Anniversary of ZNTU. It was held on the basis of the Department of Ukrainian Studies and the ZMP of the Faculty of Humanities as part of the Days of Science in Ukraine. On November 8, the already traditional student conference was opened by its curator and founder – associate professor Halyna Serhiyivna Onufrienko, emphasizing that for the nation, the language is a guarantee of eternity, it is its genetic code, it is its history, present and future, and interestingly informed about new facts about the history of the Ukrainian language, its scientific style and terminology. The participants learned that 150 industry terminologies have already been described, more than 600 Ukrainian state standards for terms and their definitions have been developed.

This year’s conference was special: Ukraine celebrates this holiday for the 20th time, illuminated by the jubilee dates of 2016 – the 160th anniversary of the birth of the brilliant Ukrainian writer and scientist Ivan Franko and the 80th anniversary of Professor Liudmyla Symonenko, a well-known modern lexicographer, deputy of the Scientific Terminology Committee of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The conference was held from November 8 to 10. There were plenary sessions, three sectional meetings, and a round table: «Functions of terms and peculiarities of language paradigms in a scientific text» (leader – G.S. Onufrienko, secretary – student O. Zelenska), «Peculiarities of the use of industry terminology» (leader – K.S. Bondarchuk, secretary – student A. Neznamova), «Lexical problems of translation of scientific and technical of literature» (head – N.A. Polezhayeva, secretary – student D. Netepliuk), «International terminology in modern professional communication» (heads – H.S. Onufrienko, N.A. Polezhayeva). The conference was impressive in its scale: teachers and students of I-V courses from 9 Ukrainian higher education institutions (ZNTU, ZNU, ZDMU, KhNA; KNU named after T.G. Shevchenko, NASU; DNU named after O. Honchar, DSUVS; KNU; LDUVS) participated, 57 reports were heard and discussed, including poster ones. A total of more than 350 students showed interest in the issues of the conference, among them were students from all faculties of ZNTU, and mostly from GF, EF, RTF, SN, MTU, FEU, KNT.

This interesting journey into the world of Ukrainian scientific terminology was facilitated by the national flavor of the interior of the plenary session, which was created by the talented students of the Faculty of Design major: book expositions prepared by the ZNTU library (head of the sector – N.I. Fedko) were harmoniously complemented by towels, paintings with views of Khortytsia and the park «Oak Grove», stylized tin with viburnum, sunflowers, poppies and Motanka dolls. The atmosphere inspired everyone present to have a warm conversation about the Ukrainian language in various professions.

Among the best in the feedback of the conference participants, the following plenary and sectional reports were noted: on the guardian of Ukrainian terminology (Olexandra Zelenska and Kateryna Bilinets, GF-316), on the Ukrainian translation of English and Polish medical terminology (Bohdan Belinsky, ZDMU), on international terms in the professional communication of humanitarians (Iryna Krashevska, GF-315), on eponymous terms in the language of mathematics (Dmytro Kolupaev, ZNU), about the conceptual meaning in the historical evolution of the term «diplomacy» (Anna Mikheeva, GF-224), about the Internet as a training ground for the development of natural language (Iryna Shkarupa, RT-814), about English borrowings in Ukrainian terminology (Yuliia Bazhan, E-114), about ecological terms-neologisms (Mariia Syrotyuk, ZNU), about the linguistic peculiarities of the terminology of international tourism (Daria Netepliuk, MTU-134), about the work of Nestor Litopystia (Anastasiia Zhuribida, IF-816), about modern problems of Ukrainian translation of pharmaceutical (Maksym Chornyi, ZDMU) and clinical (Hrystyna Andreeva, ZDMU) terminology, about journalism terms (Svitlana Albinovska, SN-425), about the structure of terms in economic terminology (Kateryna Makrieva, FEU-414) and others. Therefore, the reports of students from ZNTU, ZDMU, ZNU, KhNU, and DNU were very interesting. Such a modern format of scientific communication as poster presentations (V. Krasnytskyi, K. Sivak, O. Shmyga and Yu. Shmyga from Kyiv; Ye. Bade from Kryvyi Rih, etc.) was appropriate. For the photojournalism of the conference, ZNTU students majoring in «Journalism» and «Design» photographed it.

Ukrainian language united students of different specialties, different universities and different cities of Ukraine. The conference helped all the speakers to gain important experience in public communication, and all its participants to enrich their general erudition and speech culture and to deepen their knowledge of the chosen profession and the skills of verbal persuasion.

This traditional conference can be safely called unique, because in Zaporizhzhia, our university annually brings together students and teachers from different regions of Ukraine and even from abroad (Poland, Germany) to discuss current problems of the Ukrainian scientific language.

The conference as a truly patriotic event had great educational and spiritual potential. Because the language is the soul of millions of Ukrainians, hardened by history, nurtured by the creativity of both writers and scientists. There is no Ukraine without language, sunflowers and viburnum!

The conference through the eyes of its participants

This scientific project, which has become an annual scientific holiday, is difficult to overestimate. The attention of the organizers to each participant of the conference, promptness of work and high professionalism deserve the highest praise. The conference left behind very pleasant emotions. It began with an opening speech by its organizer G.S. Onufrienko, who reminded the students of the importance of a culture of professional communication. Without a letter, there is no word. Without a word, there will be no sentence. Without a sentence – there will be no speech. Without a common language – there will be no state! We must always remember this, love and cherish the Ukrainian language! Such conferences are a tribute to all generations that brought us this heritage – our native language! We looked at the colorful interior of the plenary meeting, heard the Ukrainian language, and our spirit was captured: everything is so familiar and cozy. I attended the conference for the first time. I was impressed by the preparedness of the speakers of the plenary session, who knew the material well and easily provided a large number of examples. All this was organically combined with the aesthetic design of the auditorium. My impressions of the conference are the best. I learned a lot of new and interesting things for myself. I love practical speakers with real life and professional experience, with a large amount of knowledge, who already share their skills in the scientific world and motivate others to succeed. Such a speaker at this conference was Onufrienko Halyna Serhiyivna, who moved everyone with her opening speech and optimistic conclusion. It is worth noting the extremely high level of organization and the consistently hospitable atmosphere of this scientific event, which, together with the current topics and interesting discussions, made the conference at ZNTU for the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language a bright, consolidating and expected scientific event in Zaporizhzhia.
