XII Interuniversity Scientific Conference of Students, Master’s and Postgraduate Students «Actual Problems of Ukrainian Lexicography: History, Current Status»

Actual problems of Ukrainian terminology

For the twelfth year in a row, our university traditionally organizes interuniversity scientific student conferences for the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language. This year it was dedicated to the 115th anniversary of our alma mater. The conference «Actual problems of Ukrainian lexicography: history, current state» brought together students of I-IV courses and master’s students from seven Ukrainian universities (Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Kryvyi Rih, Luhansk) and postgraduate students from Poland (Poznan) and Germany (Munich).

On November 3, the conference was opened by its founder and curator, associate professor of the Department of Ukrainian Studies and ZMP Halyna Serhiyivna Onufrienko, with an inspiring speech about terminological culture in every profession, about the fact that dictionaries are the universe, the eternal companion of an educated person. It was this universe that was explored by the speakers at these «days of science».

During the plenary and three sectional meetings, the students confidently, lively, with the help of diagrams and tables, with many interesting examples, taught carefully prepared topics about the history of Ukrainian terminology, about industry terminological dictionaries (for doctors, miners, lawyers, translators, designers, mathematicians, journalists, economists, biologists, computer scientists, machine builders), about the peculiarities of the translation of terms, about outstanding lexicographers of the past and present. The largest number of speakers and listeners were from GF, GPF, FEU, RT, KNT.

Each of the speakers was asked questions by students and heads of sections. This created an atmosphere of joint intellectual work, creative discussion of current scientific problems. The experience gained by all participants during the conference is invaluable not only for first-year students who are just starting their scientific work, but also for senior students and even master’s students. In their feedback, the students noted as the most useful and interesting the reports of A. Konovalchuk (GP-213) on dictionaries of personal names, B. Belinskyi (ZDMU) on Ukrainian medical terminology, D. Kononenko (GF-313) on unique dictionaries of international term elements, D. Kolupaeva (ZNU) on dictionaries of terminology of exact sciences, A. Vovkostril (RT-813) on computer lexicography, K. Lemish (KNT-713) on computer dictionaries, V. Seredy (ZNU) on the problems of standardization of IT-technology terminology, K. Korotkova (GPF-124) on Ukrainian literary lexicography, U. Udovichenko (FEU-123) on the dictionary of B. Grinchenko, O. Sabaly (GPF-423) on dictionaries for journalists, N. Golubenko (Dnipropetrovsk) on multilingual legal dictionaries, A. Ivanova (FEU-513) on economic dictionaries, M. Chorny (ZDMU) on difficult cases of translation in medical terminology. Journalists of the Regional State Radio and Television Company interviewed the students and joined the discussion.

It was pleasant to feel at the conference thanks to the aesthetic design of the auditoriums where the meetings took place: students of the 3rd year of the GF decorated them with viburnum branches, sunflowers, their paintings with Ukrainian landscapes and still lifes. The students of GPF have prepared a photochronicle of the conference for the stand, where reports from Kryvyi Rih, Poland, and Germany are already posted.

Compared to last year, this conference impressed with a greater number of participants and speakers, a variety of topics, aesthetics of the auditoriums, a new exposition of Ukrainian dictionaries from the funds of the scientific library of ZNTU. The participants of the conference presented their reports at a high level, using informative material. And they managed to cover a wide range of various issues of modern Ukrainian lexicography.

So, both speakers and listeners understood that the conference is not only the result of serious, important and persistent joint work of students and their supervisors, but also a starting point for those who will plan research work on the professional Ukrainian language in the future. We thank the organizing committee of this large-scale conference, the teachers of the Ukrainian language for the acquired deep and thorough knowledge, for the invaluable time of scientific communication, communicative and public speaking experience, without which one cannot imagine any modern profession.

Ludmila Ivanikiv (GF-323), member of the working group of the organizing committee
Iryna Krashevska (GF-315)
Alina Nikitenko, member of the working group of the organizing committee,
head of the department of scientific work of students.
