BIOART project workshop at the Polytechnic University of Madrid
Representatives of the Zaporizhzhia National Technical University (ZNTU) head café of radio engineering and telecommunications S.V. Morshchavka, head café software tools S.O. Subbotin and Associate Professor software tools A.V. Parkhomenko participated in the Second Workshop «Signal Processing for Biomedical Engineering» (January 28 – February 1, 2019, Polytechnic University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain) under the international project «Innovative Multidisciplinary Curriculum in Artificial Implants for Bio-Engineering BSc/MSc Degrees» (BIOART, reg. no. 586114-EPP-1-2017-1-ES-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP) of the Erasmus+ program of the European Union.
Participants of the BIOART project from Ukraine and Israel improved their qualifications during the workshop: they got acquainted with the organization of the educational process at the Polytechnic of Madrid, received methodical materials for the preparation of new and improving existing training courses at the departments of software and radio engineering and telecommunications, got acquainted with the laboratory base and scientific research of the Polytechnic of Madrid.
On January 28, 2019, the workshop was held at the Higher School of Telecommunication Systems Engineering (Escuela Tecnica Superior de Ingenierıa y Sistemas de Telecomunicacion, ETSIST). The coordinator of the BIOART project, Prof. D. Luengo. The report of honorary professor of ZNTU, associate professor of the Catholic University of Leuven P. Arras, who spoke about programs in the field of biomedical engineering, work experience in preparation and implementation of international projects and scientific research, was interesting. The representatives of the partner universities also discussed the nominations of experts who will perform an external evaluation of the quality of project implementation. The discussion on the preparation of study plans, work programs and their distribution among the working groups of the project participants turned out to be meaningful.
On January 29, 2019, the workshop continued its work at ETSIST. Issues of dissemination of project results were considered. After that, ETSIST representatives made presentations of the institution and its bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. The visit of the workshop participants to the department of signal theory and communication was interesting, where anechoic and reverberation chambers, a radio frequency laboratory, an acoustics laboratory, a sound recording studio, an image processing laboratory, and a TV program recording studio were demonstrated. Issues of financial management and preparation of reports were also discussed. Excursions to the telecommunications museum and the «Digital House» laboratory were also held for the workshop participants.
On January 30, 2019, the workshop was held at the Biomedical Technology Center. The director of the center, H. Guineya, and the deputy director, F. Rojo, made a welcome speech and presentation of the center. Excursions to the center’s laboratories: cognitive neurology, magnetoencephalography, biomaterials and regenerative engineering, and bioinstruments were informative. After that, the workshop moved to the Higher Technical School of Telecommunications Engineering (Escuela Tecnica Superior de Ingenierıa de Telecomunicacion, ETSIT), where there was a presentation of the school, its library, and tours were conducted to the laboratories: anechoic chamber, the Institute of Optoelectronic Systems and Microtechnology, the «Smart House» laboratory.
On January 31, 2019, the workshop worked at ETSIST. E. Shmueli gave a presentation of online learning tools. Presentation of S.O. Saturday was devoted to the issue of highlighting the project results in a collection of reports. The lectures «Sensors» by C. Benavente, «Methods of signal recognition» (H. Gutierrez-Arriola, R. Fraile), «Digital processing of biomedical signals» (D. Luengo), «Sparse output for ECG signals» (D. Luengo), «Biometrics» (D. Meltzer) turned out to be informative. Informal discussions and debates between project partners were also held.
On February 1, 2019, the final meeting was held at the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineering (Escuela Tecnica Superior de Ingenierıa Industrial, ETSII). Project participants listened to a presentation of the school’s activities. After that, they got acquainted with the material and technical base: the laboratory of power electronics, the laboratory of robotics and intelligent machines, the laboratory of design in bioengineering, the laboratories of the Research Center of Automation and Robotics, the Center of Industrial Electronics, the laboratory of product development. There were also final discussions of the results of the workshop.
The visit of ZNTU employees within the framework of the BIOART project ensured the implementation of its tasks, as well as contributed to the internationalization of ZNTU and the deepening of its cooperation with partner universities.
