The government should withdraw its bill on higher education, – M.Tomenko

Vice Speaker of Parliament Mykola Tomenko said that the Cabinet of Ministers should withdraw the Draft Law on Higher Education registered in the Parliament

Mykola Tomenko reported that the opposition will propose to the Government to withdraw the government’s Draft Law on Higher Education, instead registering a document prepared by the educational community, not by officials.

He recalled that today an operational working group is working to finalize the government’s draft law on higher education, headed by Mykhailo Zgurovsky, which was created at the initiative of Mykola Azarov from among rectors, students, experts and specialists.

At the same time, the politician noted that the work of this working group significantly differs from the draft law proposed by the government. «This document of the group is fundamentally different from the government bill, but it cannot be registered in the parliament, since the government and two alternative bills of people’s deputies have already been registered there,» – said M. Tomenko.

Speaking about the shortcomings of the government version of the bill on higher education, M. Tomenko noted that, among other things, the bill introduces a lot of corruption, including the strict subordination of universities to the Ministry of Education. «Therefore, our proposal: to withdraw the government one and, in the ideal version, to propose a new bill that everyone would support. In another version, the Government should introduce the bill that was prepared by specialists, not officials of the Ministry of Education and Science,» – said Tomenko.

«We believe that what this group of specialists did should be formalized as a new version of the bill on higher education, and the government draft law should be withdrawn,» – emphasized the vice-speaker. «I’m not saying it’s perfect, but the fact that the government’s bill on higher education has no support and is an anti-Ukrainian and anti-European bill is absolutely obvious,» he added.
