Let’s commemorate the 98th anniversary of the Battle of Kruty, which took place on January 16 (29), 1918 at the Kruty railway station near the village of Kruty and near the village of Pamyatne, 130 kilometers northeast of Kyiv.

This battle lasted 5 hours between the 4,000-strong Bolshevik army of Mykhailo Muravyov and a detachment of Kyiv students and fighters of the Free Cossacks, totaling about four hundred soldiers. In the course of military operations, the battle was not of decisive importance, but in the minds of many, it gained special significance thanks to the heroism of Ukrainian youth.

Contemporaries were particularly impressed by the burial of young men who were captured by the Bolsheviks after the battle and 27 of whom were executed by them.

At a funeral in Kyiv near the Askold grave, the head of the Ukrainian Central Council, Mykhailo Hrushevskyi, called the young men who died in an unequal struggle heroes, and the poet Pavlo Tychyna dedicated the poem «Remembrance of the Thirty» to the heroic deed.

In 2006, a monument was erected at the site of the battle. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the battle, the Mint issued a commemorative hryvnia.
