Results of the ZNTU_SetUp team’s participation in the world semi-finals of the ACM-ICPC Student Programming Olympiad

For the first time in the last nine years, the Zaporizhzhia National Technical University (ZNTU) team won the right to participate in the world semi-finals of the ACM-ICPC Student Programming Olympiad. The team’s presence at the Olympiad was made possible thanks to the support of the administration and the trade union committee of ZNTU students.

The ZNTU_SetUp team (Zadorozhny Evgeny Vitaliyevich, Bezsonov Andriy Georgiyevich, Kosarenko Viktoriya Gennadiyivna, KNT-411, 3rd year) showed a successful result, taking 13th place in the final table of the world semi-final and 10th place in the final of the Ukrainian championship in the higher league.

The South-East European semi-final of the world student programming Olympiad ACM-ICPC was held from October 11 to 13, 2013 at Vinnytsia National Technical University (VNTU) and was held simultaneously with the final of the Ukrainian championship in the higher league.

In general, in the semi-final of the world student programming Olympiad 79 teams from 7 countries of South-Eastern Europe. Thanks to the Internet, the semi-final of the world championship was held simultaneously at two venues: in Vinnytsia and Bucharest. The participants of the Vinnytsia world semi-final were 42 teams from Ukraine, Moldova and Turkey, and the Technical University of Bucharest hosted 37 teams from Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria and Macedonia.

The Olympiad was sponsored by leading world IT companies: Yandex, Facebook, Microsoft, BMS consulting, S&T, CDM, Datagroup, SysIQ, ABBYY, Miratech, WIN interactive, Impression computers and others.

The official opening of the world semi-final in Vinnytsia began with a welcoming speech by the rector of VNTU, Professor Volodymyr Vitaliyovich Grabko, and a report by the director of the world semi-final, Professor Volodymyr Ivanovich Mesyura.

After the opening ceremony of the Olympiad, a trial round was held (acquaintance with the Olympiad system). The participants of the Olympiad were also offered technical reports by representatives of Yandex and Facebook on the most modern methods of processing and analyzing data on the World Wide Web.

The main round of the competition could be watched online via the Internet. The competition was quite difficult: in 5 hours, it was necessary to solve 10 complex and at the same time interesting problems, for understanding and solving which knowledge was required not only of programming languages (C/C++, Java) and mathematics, but also of the theory of algorithms, graph theory, combinatorics, and most importantly – to have non-standard fast logical thinking. At the same time, only one computer was allocated to the team consisting of 3 people, that is, the competition required coordinated team cooperation from the participants.

The winners of the world semi-final in the absolute standings:

  • first place was won by the SobolevTeam team (Kharkiv National University named after V.N. Karazin)
  • second place was taken by the BZFlags team (Kyiv National University named after T. Shevchenko) and the Phantom Menace team (Tavria National University named after V.I. Vernadsky)
  • in 3rd place – team ONU 1 2/3 (Odessa National University named after I.I. Mechnikov), team Unibuc_BigDawgs (Bucharest Technical University) and team Frogs (Kyiv National University named after T. Shevchenko)

You can find more detailed information about the participants’ results on the Olympiad website.

The Olympiad program also included the following entertainment events: visiting a water, light and music show (Roshen light and music fountain) in Vinnytsia, an excursion to the Art Museum of VNTU, a city tour with a visit to the museum-estate of M.I. Pirogov and Hitler’s stakes, bowling/billiards/ping-pong competitions and others.

In general, participation in Olympiads of this level – this is an opportunity to gain a lot of experience, because getting into the list of finalists – means, first of all, defeating yourself. It is also an opportunity to attract the attention of IT companies and receive interesting offers from them for further employment.

We sincerely congratulate the winners, we hope that all students received great pleasure and useful skills from participating in the Olympiad, and we wish everyone to successfully apply their knowledge in life in the future!
