Results of the semi-finals of the ACM-ICPC world and the III stage of the All-Ukrainian student programming Olympiad

From October 16 to 19, 2014, the semi-finals of the ACM-ICPC Student Programming Olympiad in Southeast Europe took place at the Vinnytsia National Technical University (VNTU), which was held simultaneously with the finals of the Ukrainian ACM-ICPC Programming Championship in the top league.

According to the results of the competition, the ZNTU_SetUp team showed an excellent result, taking the 8 prize place in the final table of the world semi-finals and the 7 prize place in the final of the championship of Ukraine in the higher league and solving 7 problems out of 10, and the ZNTU_Kappatalize team gained a lot of experience and significant practical skills to participate in the world semi-finals, which will allow them in the future to represent ZNTU with dignity (having solved 3 problems out of 10).

In total, 76 teams from 8 countries of Southeast Europe competed in the world semifinals of the Student Programming Olympiad. Thanks to the worldwide Internet, the semi-finals of the world championship were held simultaneously at two venues: in Vinnytsia and in Bucharest. 34 teams from Ukraine and Turkey took part in the Vinnytsia World Semi-Final, and Bucharest Technical University hosted 42 teams from Romania, Albania, Turkey, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldova and Macedonia.

Zaporizhzhia National Technical University was represented at the Olympiad by two teams:

  • ZNTU_SetUp: Evgeny Vitaliyovych Zadorozhniy, Andriy Georgiyovych Bezsonov, Viktoriya Hennadiyevna Kosarenko, KNT-411, IV year
  • ZNTU_Kappatalize: Yevhen Romanovych Tverdokhlib, KNT-213, Maksym Evgenovich Mishchenko, KNT-413, II year, Anzhelika Olehivna Kovalchuk, KNT-512, III year

The official opening of the World Semi-Finals in Vinnytsia began with a welcome speech by the First Vice-Rector of VNTU, Professor Oleksandr Nikiforovich Romanyuk, and a report by the Director of the World Semi-Finals, Professor Volodymyr Ivanovich Mesyura.

After the opening ceremony of the Olympiad, a trial tour took place (acquaintance with the Olympiad system). The participants of the Olympiad were also offered a technical report by a Facebook company representative on successfully passing interviews in IT companies.

The main round of the competition could be watched online via the Internet. The competition was quite difficult: in 5 hours it was necessary to solve 10 complex and at the same time interesting problems, for the understanding and solution of which it was necessary to know not only programming languages (C/C++, Java) and mathematics, but also the theory of algorithms, graph theory, combinatorics, and most importantly – the possession of non-standard fast logical thinking. At the same time, only one computer was allocated to a team consisting of 3 people, that is, the competition required coordinated team cooperation from the participants.

The results of the participants can be found on the website of the Olympiad.

The program of the Olympiad also included the following entertainment events: a visit to the show of water, light and music (light and music fountain Roshen) in the city of Vinnytsia, an excursion to the VNTU Art Museum, a tour of the city with a visit to the museum-manor of M.I. Pirogov and Hitler’s bets, bowling competitions and others.

At the same time, the III (final) stage of the All-Ukrainian student team programming Olympiad in the second league was held at the Kharkiv National University of Economics on the basis of the Department of Information Systems. About 40 teams from all regions of Ukraine took part in the Olympiad, which successfully competed in the semifinals of the Ukrainian Championship (quarterfinals of the World Championship), but did not qualify for the semifinals of the World Championship.

Zaporizhzhia National Technical University was represented at the Olympiad by the ZNTU_ByteShift team: Mykyta Vyacheslavovich Grishin, Danylo Serhiyevich Shatokhin, KNT-412, 3rd year.

According to the results of the competition, the ZNTU_ByteShift team, despite the fact that it was represented with an incomplete team, showed a good result, solving 6 problems out of 13.

The team ZNTU_BroForce should also be noted: Lysenko Mykyta Eduardovych, Birulya Ihor Ihorovych, Grabovska Yuliya Olehivna, KNT-423, 2nd year, which took part in the final of Ukraine (second league) outside the competition (online), solving 4 problems out of 13.

The Olympiads were sponsored by the world’s leading IT companies: IBM, AM-SOFT, Facebook, Microsoft, WIN Interactive, Infopulse, Datagroup, Materialise, CDM, ABBYY, EY, Tucha, Kyivstar, ILOGOS, Miratech, 1C, SysIQ, GlobalLogic, SoftServe, Kaspersky and others.

The presence of the teams at the Olympics was made possible thanks to the support of the rectorate and the trade union committee of students of ZNTU.

In general, participation in Olympiads of this level is an opportunity to gain enormous experience, because getting on the list of finalists means, first of all, defeating yourself. It is also an opportunity to attract the attention of IT companies and receive interesting offers from them regarding further employment.

We sincerely congratulate the winners, we hope that all students got great pleasure and useful skills from participating in the Olympiad, and we wish everyone to successfully apply their knowledge in life in the future!
