Culture of verbal presentation in Ukraine: interuniversity «round table»

To mark the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language and the 119th anniversary of the Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University, the Department of Ukrainian Studies and General Language Training of the Faculty of Humanities organized and held on November 7, 2019 an interuniversity «round table» with international participation (Gladii Andrii, Iceland) – «Culture of verbal presentation in Ukraine: historical origins, features, modern problems».

Students of 1st-4th courses of various specialties and various faculties of «Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic» (GF, BAD, SN, KST, IF, FEU, MF, LF) and students and master’s students of other Ukrainian higher education institutions (ZNU, KhNNRA, NAVS-Kyiv, LDUVS), teachers of the ZMP section, scientists, journalists, employees of the scientific library, and folk craftsmen discussed important and practically significant problems in the format of three «round table» locations for several hours: the historical origins of public speaking in Ukraine, the features of presentation in various professional discourses, the problems and achievements of modern verbal presentation.

The «round table» session was opened in the hall of art history literature by its curator – Associate Professor, Doctor of Philosophy in Philological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Studies and General Language Training Halyna Serhiivna Onufrienko, welcoming the participants and thanking them for their active participation in such an effective form of collective work, emphasizing the important functions of the Ukrainian language as the state language in modern society and explaining the heterogeneous nature of the success of a verbal presentation.

A feature of this year’s meeting is the active exchange of knowledge and experience about the art of presentation through the means of the presentation itself.

Student presentations were distinguished by interesting issues, a good practical level of knowledge of the modern Ukrainian literary language, oratory culture and originality of the use of visuals, audio, video and photo materials.

The audience was very attentive, took notes of useful and interesting things, asked questions. The heads of the locations (associate professors G.S. Onufrienko, T.G. Bilenko, I.O. Voronyuk), providing the work schedule, clarified, supplemented, and summarized.

The format of most of the presentations presented impressed both with their high quality and genre diversity. The inspired and emotional song and musical composition «My Ukraine», prepared by A. Kosovych and G. Safarova, the literary portrait «The Phenomenon of the Writer Emma Andiyevska» laureate of the Shevchenko Prize 2018 », book exhibitions-presentations of the scientific library «Rhetorical horizons of the Ukrainian communication space», «Language tips for a successful presentation», «Literary horizons of the Zaporizhzhia region», poster presentations («Ukraine in ancient Scandinavian sagas»), expositions of decorative and applied arts («Ukrainian amulets», «Motanki dolls») and painting («Picturesque Ukraine», «Dialogue of cultures», «The vast world of Mariia Pryimachenko», «Avant-garde painting as a phenomenon of fine arts».

Students Hrybko V. (FSN-316), Romanovsky V. (IF-318sp), Tsyganenko D. (IF-219) prepared a photo chronicle of the event.

The participants of the «round table» in their reviews identified the following first-year students as the most successful performances: Stryzhko Ihor (GF-219), Fomenko Valeria (FBAD-539), Karpenko Darya (GF-219), Kolbasa Dmytro (FKNT-229), Borysiuk Olena (FBAD-539sp), Karpenko Angelina (FKNT-139), Yatsenko Anastasiia (FKNT-119), Panas Oleksandr (MF-719), Palladi Diana (FBAD-519), Sokolov Mykhailo (FKNT-519).

Senior-year students, who have repeatedly participated in scientific conferences and have experience in public communication, confidently and convincingly convinced, – Kovalenko Elizaveta (GF-217), Kavun Anna (FSN-316), Shishkina Sofiia (FSN-317).

The speeches of students Karnaukh Veronika (FKNT-129), Chornyhina Kateryna (FBAD-529), Minakov Ivan (IF-319), Levada Viktoriia (GF-219), Sidomon Anastasiia (FSN-318), Lysenko Kateryna (FEU-519), Puchkova Anastasiia (ZNU), Semenyuk Darya (GF-319), Yakovenko Viktoriia (FSN-317), Nechyporuk Yevgenia (KhNNRA) were interesting with the examples given in highlighting current issues.

The atmosphere of pleasant, sincere and creative cooperation with the priority of knowledge, skills and aesthetics of verbal communication contributed to the effectiveness of the discussion of topical problems of modern professional communication.

A creative meeting with O.B. Glady – a member of the National Union of Journalists, a master class of «Motanky Dolls· S.V. Balueva – a craftswoman of the TO «Samotsvety Zaporizhzhia», art expositions and book exhibitions, the design of which was carried out by N.I. Fedko – head of the scientific library sector of the National University «ZP», inspired the participants in their own creative searches.

The «Round Table», bringing together students from different higher education institutions, different faculties and specialties, different courses and levels of higher education on the eve of the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, helped to realize that oratory skills are acquired gradually. And the first steps in the field of general and applied rhetoric have been taken by students, but every day they need to improve themselves on the path to success.

Skrebkova A.V., specialist of the student public relations department, member of the «round table» working group
