From October 15 to 18, 2015, the fifth semi-final of the world student programming Olympiad in Southeast Europe was held at Vinnytsia National Technical University (VNTU), which was held simultaneously with the final of the Ukrainian Higher Education Programming Championship. league.
In total, 86 teams from 7 countries of South-Eastern Europe competed in the World Student Programming Olympiad. Thanks to the Internet, the World Championship semi-final was held simultaneously at two venues: in Vinnytsia and Bucharest. The participants of the Vinnytsia World Semi-final were 44 teams from Ukraine, and the Technical University of Bucharest hosted 42 teams from the Republic of Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova, Romania, the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Turkey.
The official opening of the World Semi-final in Vinnytsia began with a welcoming speech by the Rector of VNTU, Professor Volodymyr Vitaliyovich Grabko, and a report by the Director of the World Semi-final, Professor Volodymyr Ivanovich Mesyura.
After the opening ceremony of the Olympiad, a trial round was held (acquaintance with the Olympiad system). The participants of the Olympiad were also offered a technical report by a representative of Facebook.
The main round of the competition could be watched online via the Internet. The competition was quite difficult: in 5 hours it was necessary to solve 10 complex and at the same time interesting problems, for understanding and solving which knowledge was required not only of programming languages (C/C++, Java) and mathematics, but also of the theory of algorithms, graph theory, combinatorics, and most importantly – possession of non-standard fast logical thinking. At the same time, only one computer was allocated to the team consisting of 3 people, that is, the competition required coordinated team cooperation from the participants.
The winners of the world semi-final in the absolute standings:
– the first place was won by the team ZNTU_SetUp (ZNTU);
– the second place was taken by the teams LNU Penguins (Lviv National University) and Flawless (T. Shevchenko National University of Kyiv);
– in 3rd place – Frogs and Unicon (T. Shevchenko National University of Kyiv), [UNIBUC] PenReturnedIs (Bucharest Technical University).
You can find more detailed information about the participants’ results on the Olympiad website.

The Olympiad was sponsored by: IBM (general sponsor), Facebook (platinum sponsor) and Microsoft (gold sponsor), as well as CDM, DataGroup, WinInterective, Astound. Ukrnet acted as the general media partner.
The ZNTU_Kappatalize team gained vast experience and solid practical skills from participating in the world semi-finals, which will allow them to represent ZNTU with dignity in the future.
In general, participating in Olympiads of this level – this is an opportunity to gain vast experience, because getting into the list of finalists – means, first of all, defeating yourself. It is also an opportunity to attract the attention of IT companies and receive interesting offers from them regarding further employment.
We sincerely congratulate the winners, we hope that all students received great pleasure and useful skills from participating in the Olympiad, and we wish everyone to successfully apply their knowledge in life in the future!
