ORCID Scholar Identifiers

ORCID Scholar Identifiers

Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) – an open, non-profit project to create and maintain a registry of unique researcher identifiers, a transparent way to link research activities and access these identifiers. ORCID is unique due to its independence from scientific disciplines and national borders, as well as interaction with other identification systems.

The main purpose of introducing the ORCID system is to be able to identify scientific works written by different scientists with the same first and last names. The identifier is a 16-digit number, unique for each author.

An ORCID account includes information about the scientist’s name, his email address, the name of the organization and his research activities. ORCID recognizes the need to control the distribution of this data and provides appropriate tools to manage the level of data privacy.

Structure of the ORCID identifier:

The ORCID ID is a 16-digit number, consistent with the ISO standard (ISO 27729). In addition to the digits 0 through 9, the identifier may contain the capital letter X, representing the number 10.

ORCID ID – is a URI, so it is displayed as an address of the form http://orcid.org/xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx.

ORCID privacy settings.

Researchers control the privacy settings of their data in ORCID. There are three levels of privacy:

Public – Public. The information is available for viewing by any user of the ORCID.org website, as well as anyone using the public ORCID software.

Limited – Limited. The information is available for viewing by so-called Trusted Parties that you have authorized. You can change the permission for Trusted Parties in your account settings.

Private – Personal. The information is available only to you.

Entering an identifier simplifies the procedure for filling out all kinds of forms when publishing an article. When sending an article to a journal, you can simply enter your ORCID, and the system will determine your name and the personal data it needs.

The openness of the identifier means that it can be used by all kinds of organizations and services that are engaged in compiling databases of publications, links, grants or contacts. This will allow them to automate many of their functions, making them more reliable.
