To the 200th anniversary of Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko
Dear colleagues!
The Union of Rectors of Higher Educational Institutions of Ukraine calls on higher educational institutions, regardless of the form of ownership and level of accreditation, despite the great grief that the country suffered as a result of the tragic deaths on the Maidan, despite the anxiety and restlessness we are experiencing, standing on the precipice of war, despite the economic and everyday difficulties of the current moment, to make every effort to celebrate the 200-year anniversary with dignity the immortal genius-thinker, writer, artist, spiritual patron of the Ukrainian people – Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko.
Today’s social and political changes in our country and accompanying disturbances of public peace, as well as challenges related to the introduction of foreign military formations into the territory of Ukraine, should not become an obstacle to the national commemoration of the memory of the Great Kobzar, because the struggle for the freedom, unity and cohesion of the Ukrainian people was Taras Shevchenko’s life credo.
«Fight – win! God help you! For you is the truth, for you is the glory and the holy will!» – the passionate words of the poet reach us now through the ages, surprising with the modernity and relevance of the sound.
We are sure that in this difficult time for our people, the celebration of the glorious anniversary of such an outstanding and in many aspects defining figure for Ukraine, Taras Shevchenko, will encourage us to deeply consider civic, artistic and spiritual values, confirmed not only by the brilliant works, but also by the life of the Poet.
We call on you, dear leaders, to involve student youth and the public of the region in a scientific discussion of Kobzar’s work, to understand the deep wisdom of his texts, to accept his moral, ethical and aesthetic postulates, because we are deeply convinced that such measures are now very timely and necessary, because they will actively contribute to the strengthening of unity and harmony in our society, and strengthen the patriotic feelings of citizens and their commitment to democratic values.
May the ardent word of Kobzarev live among us forever, may his high faith inspire us, may his sincere and sacrificial love warm us!
Sincerely
President of the Union of Rectors
L.V. Hubersky
