What is ISO 9001

ISO 9001 is an international standard that sets out the criteria for a quality management system. Its application enables an organization to build its operations on clearly defined processes, distribution of responsibilities, performance monitoring, risk analysis, and continuous improvement.

The ISO 9001:2015 standard is officially titled “Quality Management Systems — Requirements” and was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) within the ISO/TC 176 technical committee. In Ukraine, its provisions are applied through nationally adopted standards harmonized with the international version.

ISO 9001 is based on the understanding that quality is not ensured by isolated decisions or actions, but by the systemic organization of work. That is why the standard directs an organization to manage its activities through interrelated processes that are planned, implemented, controlled, and improved as necessary.

The standard is based on seven quality management principles:

  • Customer focus
  • Leadership
  • Engagement of people
  • Process approach
  • Continuous improvement
  • Evidence-based decision making
  • Relationship management

The ISO 9001:2015 version significantly updated the approach to quality management systems. One of its key features was the introduction of risk-based thinking. Additionally, the standard is built on the High Level Structure (HLS), ensuring alignment with other modern ISO standards (environmental management, occupational health and safety, information security, etc.).

History of the ISO 9001 Standard

The standard evolved from earlier approaches to quality assurance (its origins are linked to the British standard BS 5750, developed in 1979). In 1987, the International Organization for Standardization published the first edition of the standard.

1987 First edition of ISO 9001, focused primarily on the formalization and documentation of processes.
1994 Revision of the standard with an increased focus on documentation and preventive actions.
2000 A major update wherein the standard shifted from a predominantly document-oriented model to a process approach.
2008 Clarification of the standard’s provisions and an increase in its alignment with other management system standards.
2015 The current version, which places greater emphasis on the strategic context of the organization’s activities, risk-based thinking, and integration with other management systems.
