Software Engineering

Software Engineering is an educational and professional program for those who strive to create modern software products, participate in the full software development life cycle and work with advanced technologies of the IT industry. The program combines fundamental training with practical experience, forming specialists capable of designing, developing, testing, implementing and maintaining software systems of varying complexity.

During their studies, students master modern software engineering methodologies, object-oriented and cross-platform programming, web development, software requirements analysis, databases, software system architecture, IT project management, DevOps technologies, artificial intelligence systems, data mining, information security and software quality assurance. Significant attention is paid to teamwork, the use of modern development environments, version control systems, cloud services and automation tools.

The educational process is practice-oriented: students carry out projects, undergo training and production and pre-diploma practice, work with modern development tools and gain experience in creating software products in accordance with international standards. The program also develops skills in algorithmic thinking, architectural design, testing, documentation and software quality assurance.

Study is carried out in the modern educational environment of the Faculty of Computer Science and Technology with the opportunity to participate in international projects and academic mobility programs Erasmus+, DAAD and partner universities in Europe. A bachelor’s degree in software engineering opens up broad prospects for professional development in Ukrainian and international IT companies, technology startups, research centers and organizations involved in the creation, implementation and support of modern software.

Program Profile

  • Object of activity:

    scientific and engineering foundations of software engineering technologies, software engineering processes: requirements definition, creation, operation, maintenance, assurance and assessment of software quality

  • Theoretical content:

    theories, concepts, principles, requirements definition, architectural design, development, testing, deployment, operation, maintenance and assurance of the quality of software products and/or systems, data processing and storage software, covering all stages of the software life cycle

  • Methods and technologies:

    methods, techniques, algorithms and technologies for solving engineering problems in the software life cycle such as requirements definition, architectural and component design, programming, testing, integration and deployment, quality assurance, configuration management, software engineering project management and engineering processes

  • Tools and equipment:

    hardware and specialized computer software (development environments, version control systems, databases, testing and quality assurance, DevOps and CI/CD platforms, cloud services, modeling tools, teamwork and artificial intelligence tools) used in software engineering

Teaching and Assessment

Student-centered and problem-oriented learning, project work, independent work

Semester exams and tests, defense of a coursework (project), defense of a practice report, public defense of a qualification work. The assessment of academic achievements of higher education applicants is carried out on a 100-point scale or on a two-point scale (passed / not passed). Positive grades for all forms of control are grades from 60 to 100 points on a 100-point scale and a grade of «passed» on a two-point scale. The limit of unsatisfactory learning according to the results of the final control is a grade below 60 points on a 100-point scale or a grade of «not passed» on a two-point scale.

Receiving a grade of 60 points and above implies receiving positive grades in all mandatory types of current control specified in the educational component curriculum.

Resource Provision

Scientific and pedagogical workers who provide the educational process in the specialty have more than two years of experience in scientific and pedagogical activities and a level of scientific and professional activity that meets the Licensing Conditions for the Conduct of Educational Activities. All teachers who provide the educational components of professional training are qualified in accordance with the specialty. Teachers who provide the educational process in the specialty actively cooperate with leading foreign and Ukrainian universities within the framework of international educational programs, constantly participate in international scientific conferences, seminars and symposiums both in Ukraine and abroad. In recent years, the teachers of the Department of Software Tools have participated in the implementation of the following international projects of the Tempus program of the European Union: DESIRE (2013-2016) «Development of courses on embedded systems using innovative virtual approaches for the integration of science, education and industry in Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia» (544091-TEMPUS-1- 2013-1-BE-TEMPUS-JPCR), CERES (2013-2016) «Centers of Excellence for Young Scientists» (544137- TEMPUS-1-2013-1-SK-TEMPUSJPHES), Erasmus+ programs of the European Union: ALIOT (2016-2019) «Internet of Things: a new curriculum for the needs of industry and society» (573818-EPP-1-2016-1- UK-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP), BIOART (2017-2021) «Innovative multidisciplinary curriculum for the training of bachelors and masters in artificial implants for bioengineering» (586114-EPP-1-2017-1-ES-EPPKA2- CBHE-JP), WORK4CE (2020-2023) «Cross-domain competencies for ensuring healthy and safe work in the 21st century» (619034-EPP-1-2020-1- UA-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP), the programs of the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD VIMACS (Virtual Master Cooperation Data Science) and EU-VIMUK (EuroPIM Virtual Master School Ukraine). During the implementation of the Tempus, Erasmus+ and DAAD projects, teachers providing the educational process underwent advanced training and internships at leading foreign and Ukrainian universities, published joint scientific and teaching materials together with foreign colleagues.

The university meets the technological requirements of the Licensing Conditions for Educational Activities. The general infrastructure of the university includes educational buildings with specialized and subject auditoriums, cafeterias, a sports and recreation complex, and dormitories. To implement the educational program, the Department of Software has two lecture halls and seven computer laboratories and classes equipped with modern computing equipment and peripheral devices and equipment.
The lecture halls, laboratories, and classes are fully equipped with multimedia equipment, as well as air conditioning. All computer equipment is connected to the Internet, and wireless access to this network is also provided. For general education disciplines, lecture halls and laboratories of the relevant general departments that have the necessary equipment are used. Higher education students who need it are provided with a dormitory.

Qualification work involves solving a specialized task or a practical problem of software engineering, characterized by complexity and uncertainty of conditions, with the application of theories and methods of information technologies.

Academic plagiarism, falsification, fabrication and plagiarism cannot be included in the qualification work.

Qualification work must be made public by placing it in the repository of Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic University. Publication of qualification works containing information with limited access is carried out in accordance with the requirements of current legislation.
