Alchemy of the 21st century — through science to understanding the world

On April 12, a new lesson of the “Carousel of Directions” group for students in grades 6–7 was held at the Children’s and Youth Scientific University “Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic”. This time the topic was “Alchemy of the 21st Century: Modern Materials Science”.

It was a lesson-journey. Interesting and with unexpected discoveries.
The students got acquainted with the world of metals — not through complex formulas, but through pop culture. They learned that many comic book characters have engineering degrees, and their favorite songs also mention titanium, steel, and gold.

During the practical part, the participants investigated the properties of metals, studied their applications in various fields, experimented with magnets, and even played the “Guess the Metal” quiz.

Particular attention was paid to the topic of the importance of materials science in wartime.
The students saw examples of how new materials affect safety, efficiency, and reliability. This is armor for equipment. These are drones, helmets, bulletproof vests.
