University history
Oleksandrivske Mechanical and Technical School
In 1900, a mechanical and technical school was opened in the county town of Oleksandrivsk (since 1921 – Zaporizhia). This is where the biography of our higher education institution began.
The school was one of the first secondary educational institutions in Ukraine. It trained mechanical technicians for industrial enterprises.
The first director of the school was N.F. Rudolf for less than a year, and then he was replaced by Denis Nikolaevich Podderyogin, an experienced progressive engineer and teacher. During his 18 years as director, he did a lot for the establishment and development of the school.
Classes at the school began in the premises of a two-class public school. At the same time, construction of the school premises was underway. In the spring of 1902, not only a three-story school complex was built on Zhukovsky Street (now Universytetskaya Street), but also workshops and an autonomous power plant.
The main building, as well as two two-story buildings, housed classrooms, physics and mechanics labs, a chemical laboratory, a drawing room, a room for teachers and class teachers, a library, a medical clinic, an assembly hall, and a store where you could buy clothes, shoes, and other industrial products.
Students received fundamental theoretical and practical training: they studied history, geography, mechanics, physics, mathematics, geometry, electrical engineering, the basics of the resistance of materials, the technology of metal and wood processing, as well as chemistry, Russian and German, the law of God, drawing, calligraphy, drafting, singing. A fifth of the study time was allocated for work in workshops equipped with the latest devices and equipment, furniture.
The school had well-equipped workshops with new equipment: mechanical, blacksmith, lathe, carpentry, model, as well as the engine department.
Oleksandrivska Industrial and Technical School
20 years after the establishment of the Mechanical and Technical School in Oleksandrivsk, in 1920 it was reorganized into an industrial technical school with the rights of an institute. At that time, the city was run by whites and reds, anarchists and various gangs. Machine tools and equipment were taken out of the school’s workshops, and a unique garden was cut down in a predatory manner. After the Civil War, the technical school staff, with the help of the city and district councils, restored the carpentry and
The technical school had two departments – industrial (mechanics, machine builders) and agricultural. More than two-thirds of the students came from working-class and peasant families. Therefore, they had considerable production experience, but a low level of education. In the 1920s, the technical school had preparatory courses and a labor faculty.
Tuition was paid – 30–50 rubles per year + payment for a dormitory. Two-thirds of the students received a scholarship, which in 1924 increased to 31 rubles.
The technical school sought opportunities to help poor students, for which they used the profits of production workshops, manufactured various things to order from enterprises – household items, equipment.
The educational process at the technical school was continuous, without sessions and exams. Students were involved in community service, the elimination of illiteracy, the construction of the Dnipro Hydroelectric Power Plant, and agricultural work.
Zaporizhia Institute of Agricultural Engineering
By the resolution of the RNK of the Ukrainian SSR of March 23, 1930, the Zaporizhzhia Industrial Technical School was renamed the V.Ya. Chubar Machine-Building Institute. And from July 11 of the same year, by order of the People’s Commissariat of Education of the Ukrainian SSR and the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR No. 514, it was reorganized into the Zaporizhzhia Institute of Agricultural Machine-Building.
Initially, there were four departments: agricultural, tractor, materials processing, and foundry. And already in September 1930, the tractor department was liquidated.
The institute trained specialists in agricultural machine-building not only for the needs of the Zaporizhzhia industry, but also for the industry of all of Ukraine.
In 1931, two departments were created – production and design. The production department combined foundry, blacksmithing, and mechanical and technological specialties, and the design department – tillage and harvesting machines. In 1934, two faculties were created: general technical (all general technical departments, 1st–2nd year students) and special, subordinate to the educational part (3rd–4th years, department of agricultural machinery, cold metalworking, forging and stamping, foundry). The faculty of agricultural mechanical engineering was also created.
The basics of production and engineering were mastered in the institute’s laboratories and workshops. By 1940, the institute already had 11 laboratories and 9 classrooms, production training workshops.
In 1939, the institute became subordinate to the People’s Commissariat of Secondary Mechanical Engineering of the USSR. The Statute of the Higher Educational Institution was adopted, approved by the All-Union Committee for Higher Education.
